Film Review Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

Just saw the latest animated film from DC/Warner Bros (WB). Once again I’m pretty happy with what they have produced. In the last 2-3 years DC and Warner have managed for the most part to put out some really good animated films which helps subsidize the lack of live action films that they can’t seem to make with the exception being the rebooted Batman franchise.

Even with Superman they can’t seem to get the ball rolling. Keep in mind its going on 4 years since Superman Returns (I think a very underrated movie) was released. WB is close to possibly loosing film rights through complex lawsuits as well.

This new film is essentially about the aftermath of Lex Luthor rising to the highest position in the land by becoming the President of the US. He is actually doing a really great job. He has established world peace, rebounded the American economy from an economic depression and civil disorder, and has begun employing Superhero’s as Government workers to help police the planet. And all of this has brought the crime rate down to its lowest levels in memory. His approval rating is higher then any other president in histories.

Only 2 people in the planet seem to not like or trust him, Superman and Batman. Superman can not give up his feelings and history with Luthor and except he has changed as a person. Even with the encouragement of fellow heroes he begins to think Luthor maybe a better person, but just can’t get over that edge. Batman is pretty much along for the ride and helps keep Superman in check.

Not to go to deep into the plot but Superman gets set up by Luthor for the murder of one of his most hated and dangerous villains Metallo. After this President Luthor makes a Live Television announcement to the people of the world declaring a $1 Billion dollar bounty to bring Superman to justice. Every Bad Guy comes out of the wood work to try and bring him down, and Batman has his back all along the way.

There is quite a bit more going on as well such as the impending Kryptonite Meteor heading to Earth and Luther’s inability to stop it. As well as his conflict with his various personnel who begin to question is decision making abilities as Commander and Chief.

Also there is a predictable conflict that the character Power Girl has who is a Supergirl wannabe (I don’t know if I’ve even seen before) that has a childs brain, triple D tits, Sylvester Stalone body, and a baby doll face. She has trouble deciding between her job and obligation to Luthor and her country as well as her belief in Superman as a person.

The movie like most of DC’s animated movies is smartly done enough that it will appeal to a broad range of ages, but mostly entertain the male demographic. Sorry ladies.

The film is colorful enough with tons of characters that should excite and entertain most young boys. Its smart enough to challenge tweens and teens to stimulate there interest in politics as well as fun action to entertain them. And the movie itself is smart enough to maintain the focus of fathers so that they will not loose interest, and will most likely buy into everything else. You add watching it with a son and you probably have the setting for some father-son bonding and good times!

There is plenty of goofy/teetering on ridicules things that happen that children won’t mind, but could bug adults. However when something dumb does come along the movie usually tries to make fun of it, so it sort of diffuses the “What the Hell” reaction.

So I highly recommend it for Fathers and Sons. Mom’s might be okay with it but lets be honest its superhero’s, it really is a guy thing.

So go check it out, and I think its worth making the purchase for.
