I wonder what the school teacher(s) or faculty said to her afterwards?
I remember during my Senior year in high school, first period Geometry class (Yes, I know I was a Senior when I made it to Geometry. I still fucking hate math!) I would stand for the pledge but I didn't say anything.
I think my teacher just didn't have the balls to stir the shit and he decided to say nothing. It was sort of an unwritten agreement/compromise between us.
it may have pissed some of classmates off though since I lived in a highly Conservative small town.
However being like the oldest person in the class everyone else may not have even given that kind of thing enough thought to understand my actions of Governmental Disobedience. Or they thought it was kind of cool that someone was being rebellious like that.
My attitude towards it had two driving factors.
1. I didn't understand why I had to do it everyday since I was 5, and no one could explain to me why I had to.
2. I wasn't going to say, "Under God". Nor should anyone have to.
What exactly are the rules/laws for saying the pledge? Seems unenforceable to me.
I'm going to look into it.
The difference between me and the girl is that I wasn't really causing a disturbance in class.
Her actions if continued could be seen as a distraction from the class, which I agree would be if continued, and she would probably have to have some sort talking to about it.
However if she or her family believe strongly on the issue I see no reason why she should have to partake in some outdated and quasi-superstitious ceremony in a government funded institution.
When I say it like that it feels like making a child do it is illegal. That's not a coincidence.
She is just a Kindergartner though and I'm sure she won't be in trouble for it, but I would imagine someone is going to talk to her guardians about it. If her guardians are against their child from saying the Pledge then it might be a nice small step to doing away with it.
However personally I do think the whole thing is really damn funny! Tbe ladies reaction is priceless. I imagine a dozen thoughts went through her mind within the first second and she had to struggle to think of what to say.
I would hate to think an adult set her up for that though. That would be really cruel of them. Almost as abusive as forcing religion or making a child do the Pledge of Allegiance at school.
The flip side to it is that if you have to say the Pledge of Allegiance, then you should be allowed to pray in school. It's only fair that if your going to force children to acknowledge god, that they can express their beliefs in all of their faiths openly about it.
That means religious clubs and activities should be allowed and also funded by state tax money to cover such things regardless of what the person or families faith is. All would need to be supported by the United States of America.
Why does nobody on the Far Right take this argument up?
My guess, cost in money, and bringing the wrong god(s) and faith to the school their children attend and would ultimately be exposed to. Especially if that family is helping to pay for it.
Could you imagine the outcry from the Christian Right if a fraction of a percent of their taxed income went to the Future Muslim Leaders of America.
So whats the real solution to this issue?
NO GOD OR RELIGIOUS PRACTICES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS OR GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS AT ALL!
Why? Its the only fair fucking thing to do!
Jesus Christ. What are people not getting about this? Why does this need to even be an issue?
